The Water Gardens

Without Java, you can't see the lovely Lake animation. Here's the still version:

Welcome to my water gardens here in Jefferson County, Colorado! I started outdoor water gardening in 1995, with one whiskey barrel to see just how hard it was to maintain. The whiskey barrel had one water lily, one tall marginal called Sweet Galingale, and a bunch of guppies to eat the mosquito larva. It proved to be both easy to maintain and a pretty addition to the back porch. In 1996, the decision was made to terrace the slope in the back yard and a pre-formed 150 gallon pond was bought to incorporate into the terrace design. This pond sat in the back of the shed while the design was thought out. Finally, in the spring of 1998 the terrace design was mostly completed but the 150 gallon pre-formed pond was replaced with an 800 gallon EPDM lined pond with a waterfall consisting of two 100 gallon pools. The 150 gallon preformed pond was put into the ground at the top of the slope and eventually a stream will join all the in-ground ponds together.

So as of this moment, the water gardens consist of two whiskey barrels, one small blue pot sitting on a table, an 800 gallon pond with a water fall, and a 150 gallon pond.

Bugs in the Garden

Some of the carnivorous visitors attracted to the water gardens:

Wet Pets

As of fall 1998, there are 9 goldfish in the 800 gallon pond. There are 5 shubunkins, 2 sarassas and 2 comets, most of which managed to get their mugs into these pictures.

Guppies in the whiskey barrel If you look carefully, you can see three male guppies.

The Large Water Garden

The 800 gallon water garden. This pond was put in during the summer of 1998. It's a formal pond incorporated into the terracing on the side of a hill. There are quite a few pictures of the pond, from early summer through October.

The Upper Water Garden

The 150 gallon upper pond. This little pre-formed pond will someday connect to the 800 gallon pond via a stream.
